The European Human Benchmark
Comparable human crash rates from national statistics, as the yardstick for every automated system.
Research question
How often do human drivers crash per kilometre driven, on each type of road, in each member state?
Method
We combine police-recorded crashes with the distance people drive, from national travel surveys and traffic counts. We align the definitions of a serious injury across countries.
Rates are split by road type, time of day and vehicle type. Where crashes go unreported, we estimate by how much and say so.
Where we are
We are scoping which member states publish data at the detail this needs. The paper will list the gaps as well as the rates.
This project has no findings yet. We will publish results together with the data and the method.
